Commonwealth games

Sukom volunteers get offers from overseas

KUALA LUMPUR: With the 16th Commonwealth Games now over, people who made it the best Games ever have received job offers from organisers of several major events, including the SEA Games, Sydney Olympics and 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Some staff of Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad, who organised KL '98, have been approached by countries like Bermuda and Fiji to help in their programmes.

Sukom, who had about 200 full-time staff at the peak of the Games, are expected to wind up by March next year and certain staff have started leaving the company.

Staff of the human resources and communications departments are among those who have received job offers.

Sukom communications department executive P. Chelladurai, a veteran in Malaysian sports, said foreigners who attended the Games were impressed with the ability of local officials.

"They want us to help them organise major sports events in their country and also in their developing programmes," said Chelladurai.

With the experience of four SEA Games in hand, Chelladurai himself has received offers to work in Bermuda, Fiji and Brunei. -- Bernama
